  • Dr. Joseph Nichols, Jr.

    Board Certification in Colon & Rectal Surgery

    Dr. Nichols was born and raised in Atlanta. He graduated from the University of Georgia with a BS in Biology and a MS in Microbiology. He earned his M.D. degree from the Medical College of Georgia in 1986. He completed his general surgery residency and colorectal fellowship at the Ochsner Foundation in New Orleans. He returned to Atlanta and joined the practice of his father, Dr. Joseph J. Nichols, Sr. in 1992. He practiced a broad range of colorectal surgery with his father for six years and in solo practice after his father’s retirement. He joined Piedmont Colorectal Associates in 2008. He is a Fellow of the American College of Colon and Rectal Surgeons and is board certified in colon and rectal surgery. He is certified in laparoscopic and robotic assisted minimally invasive colorectal surgery and has found this to offer a great benefit to his colon surgery patients. He also performs transanal robotic assisted rectal surgery, allowing selected benign rectal polyps and small cancers to be removed with outpatient surgery with no skin incisions. He enjoys doing colonoscopies as well as a full spectrum of anorectal procedures. Dr. Nichols’ other interests including model railroading, computers, and general repair. He lives in Atlanta with his wife Lynn, and their two daughters.

  • Dr. Joy L. McCaffrey

    Board Certification in Colon & Rectal Surgery | General Surgery

    Dr. McCaffrey was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. She received a BS in biology and graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Michigan. She then attended Wayne State University School of Medicine on a full academic scholarship and graduated in the top 5% percent of her class, including induction into the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. She completed her general surgery residency at Emory University in 2006, followed by a fellowship in colon and rectal surgery at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, MI in 2007. After completion of fellowship she joined Oakland Colon and Rectal Associates in Royal Oak, MI where she practiced until 2009. Dr. McCaffrey was recruited to join Piedmont Colorectal Associates in 2009, and she was happy to return to Atlanta. She has been a member of the Piedmont Atlanta Hospital staff since 2009 and Piedmont Henry Hospital since 2015. She is also the primary colon and rectal surgeon at The Shepherd Center, a world-renowned rehabilitation center for catastrophic spinal cord and brain injuries. She is board certified in colon and rectal surgery, as well as general surgery. She is a Fellow of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. She was named one of Atlanta’s Top Doctors by Atlanta Magazine for 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024. Dr. McCaffrey performs treatment for a wide range of colorectal issues. One of her main interests is in robotic surgery for benign and malignant diseases of the colon and rectum. She has performed the highest volume of robotic colorectal surgery at Piedmont Atlanta Hospital, successfully completing more than 800 robotic surgeries since 2013. She serves on the robotic steering committee for Piedmont Atlanta Hospital. She also enjoys performing screening and diagnostic colonoscopies, as well as a variety of office-based and surgical procedures for anorectal issues. In her free time, Dr. McCaffrey enjoys spending time with her family and friends, traveling the world, experiencing new cultures, and collecting stamps in her passport. She regularly attends live music events, hosts dinner parties, and runs road races ranging from 5k’s to half marathons.

  • Dr. Paul Joyner

    Board Certification in General Surgery Colon and Rectal Surgery

    Dr. Joyner was born in Greenville, North Carolina. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for his undergraduate degrees in Biology and Psychology. He attended the University of South Alabama College of Medicine in Mobile, AL. After finishing medical school he served at the University of Connecticut in Hartford, CT for his General Surgery Residency. He completed his colorectal fellowship at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford, CT. After completing his colorectal fellowship he worked with the Colorectal Surgeons of Greater Hartford for two years. After welcoming the third child to their family Dr. Joyner moved to Atlanta to join the practice at Piedmont Colorectal Associates in September 2015. since that time, he has provided services at Piedmont Atlanta Hospital. Dr. Joyner has been named one of Atlanta’s Top Doctors by Atlanta Magazine for 2024. He is board certified in both Colon and Rectal Surgery and General Surgery. Dr. Joyner performs treatment for a wide range of colorectal issues, both benign and malignant. He is certified to perform both robotically assisted and laparoscopic colorectal surgery for the treatment of various colorectal disorders including diverticular disease, inflammatory bowel disease and colorectal cancers. He also specializes in the care of anorectal disorders such as hemorrhoids, fissures, fistulas and fecal incontinence. He is well trained in a broad range of colon and rectal disorders and offers compassionate and comprehensive care to his patients. Dr. Joyner has served and continues to serve on many professional committees and believes that it is important to participate in the governance of the hospital you work with and maintain the quality of the care provided. Currently he serves on the Operational Council Subcommittee, the Perioperative Governance Committee, Professional Practice Evaluation Committee at Piedmont Henry Hospital and is the Director of Robotic Surgery at Piedmont Henry Hospital.   • Dr. Crystal Koerner

    Board Certified in General Surgery and Colorectal Surgery

    Dr. Koerner was born in Lynchburg, Virginia and was raised in Tampa, Florida. She graduated summa cum laude from the Florida State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Biology. She attended medical school at the Florida State University College of Medicine, where she was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society and, in 2015, graduated 1st in her class. She then completed general surgery residency at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. Following residency, she completed a colon and rectal surgery fellowship at Swedish Medical Center in Seattle, Washington. Dr. Koerner returned to Atlanta to join Piedmont Colorectal Associates in 2021. Dr. Koerner is board certified in general surgery and colorectal surgery. She is certified in minimally invasive surgery including robotic and laparoscopic surgery. She offers treatments for a wide variety of colon and rectal conditions, including colorectal malignancies, diverticular disease, inflammatory bowel disease, and motility disorders. She offers both office-based treatments and ambulatory surgery for common anorectal conditions including hemorrhoids, abscesses, anal fistulas, fecal incontinence, and anal fissures. Dr. Koerner performs both screening and diagnostic colonoscopies. Dr Koerner has been named on of Atlanta’s Top Doctors by Atlanta Magazine for 2024.   • Dr. Neha Nimmagadda

    General Surgeon

    Dr. Neha Nimmagadda was born in Chicago, Illinois and raised in Los Angeles, California. She graduated from Northwestern University with a BA in Anthropology and then attended medical school at the Keck School of Medicine at University of Southern California, where she graduated in the top 10% of her class and was inducted into the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. Dr. Nimmagadda completed her general surgery residency at Rush University/Cook County Hospital, gaining extensive experience in treating a variety of surgical diseases in a diverse patient population. She further specialized by completing a fellowship in colorectal surgery at Emory University, where she honed her skills in advanced surgical techniques and patient management. Dr. Nimmagadda joined Piedmont Colorectal Associates following fellowship. She is certified in minimally invasive techniques, including robotic and laparoscopic surgery. Dr. Nimmagadda offers comprehensive care for a wide range of colorectal conditions, such as colorectal cancers, diverticular disease, inflammatory bowel disease, and motility disorders. She also provides office-based treatments and ambulatory surgery for common anorectal conditions, including hemorrhoids, abscesses, anal fistulas, fecal incontinence, and anal fissures.   • Megan Fawbush, NP-C

    Certified Nurse Practitioner

    Megan Fawbush, NP-C was born in Indiana where she received both a licensed practical nursing degree as well as a four year degree in Nursing. In 2007, she moved to Georgia where she provided care for colorectal patients admitted to Piedmont Hospital for nearly a decade. She then received her Master’s degree with Honors from Vanderbilt University and became certified by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. She was recruited by Piedmont Colorectal Associates in 2014. This experience has enabled her to develop a broad knowledge and skill set of both office-based and inpatient surgical disorders affecting colorectal health. She splits her time between treating patients in the clinic as well as surgical assisting in the operating room. She was certified as a robotic surgical assistant in 2015 and has assisted on hundreds of robotic surgeries. In the clinic, she treats a wide range of anorectal conditions including condyloma, hemorrhoids, pruritis, anal fissures, abscesses/fistula, pilonidal cysts, and fecal incontinence. She is accepting new patients at the Piedmont Atlanta location. Having a special interest in the management of HPV, Megan also led the expansion of High Resolution Anoscopy (HRA) in the office in 2018. HRA is an integral part of the current recommendations for diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of anal condyloma and anal dysplasia.   • David Gallerani, MPH, PA-C

    Certified Physician Assistant

    David Gallerani, MPH, PA-C was born in North Carolina, grew up in Connecticut, and attended the University of South Carolina where he received both a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology as well as a Master of Public Health degree. His Master’s degree emphasized health promotion, education, and behavioral aspects of health. He worked in cancer research for three years before moving to Atlanta, Georgia to pursue a Physician Assistant/Associate degree. He is excited to have begun his career with Piedmont Colorectal Associates in 2023. David’s prior experience working with patients with cancer, a focus on health promotion, and a strong passion for GI and surgery has enabled him to develop a broad knowledge and skill set of both office-based and inpatient surgical disorders affecting colorectal health. He splits his time between treating patients in the clinic as well as surgical assisting in the operating room. In the clinic, he treats a wide range of anorectal conditions including hemorrhoids, fissures, pruritis, abscesses/fistula, pilonidal cysts, and fecal incontinence. He is accepting new patients at the Piedmont Atlanta location. In his free time, David enjoys oil painting, the outdoors, playing guitar, cooking, and spending time with his family and friends.

  • Daphnie McLeod, AGACNP-BC

    Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner | Certified Gastroenterology Registered Nurse

    Daphnie McLeod, AGACNP-BC, has a deep commitment to gastrointestinal (GI) and colorectal health. Originally from Valdosta, Georgia, she earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from Valdosta State University in 2014. She spent several years honing her clinical skills before relocating to Atlanta in 2017, where she worked closely with GI and colorectal specialists at the Piedmont Atlanta Endoscopy Lab for seven years. During this time, Daphnie developed a strong passion for GI and colorectal health, particularly in the areas of screening, prevention, and surgical management of colorectal cancer. Her dedication to the field was further solidified in 2021, when she became a Certified Gastroenterology Registered Nurse (CGRN). Daphnie’s personal connection to colorectal cancer, having lost her father to the disease in 2013, drives much of her professional focus. She is deeply committed to improving patient outcomes through education, early screening, and providing high-quality care. In 2024, Daphnie completed her Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) from the University of Alabama Birmingham, further advancing her expertise and enabling her to serve patients as an Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AGACNP-BC). She was recruited to join Piedmont Colorectal Associate shortly after. Daphnie’s passion for colorectal health continues to guide her work as she strives to make a meaningful difference in the lives of her patients. In her free time, she enjoys traveling, cooking, and hosting friends and family.
